Student Presentations

The Student Presentation Competition is confirmed for 2025 at the Y7 Workshop however selected presenters might have to participate virtually via Zoom as travel funding has not been confirmed.

Information regarding the Student Presentation at ACTOR Workshop application process.

Please read carefully before beginning/submitting your application!

ELIGIBILITY:

  • Applicants must participate in the TGN event (date TBC) in order to be considered eligible for this funding. Registration for the event is required and has to be completed by (date TBC). If the applicant is not able to attend the event, a pre-recorded presentation of approximately 2 minutes may be submitted to benjamin.duinker@mail.mcgill.ca by (date TBC).

  • Student members of ACTOR are eligible to apply for funding for an opportunity to present an ACTOR-related project at the yearly ACTOR Workshop.

  • Preference will be given to doctoral students

  • Past recipients of this funding are not eligible to apply for it again as ACTOR would like to support as many student members as possible.

  • Pending funding availability, ACTOR will fund travel, lodging, and meals for selected student presenters.

  • The yearly workshops take place during the summer, usually in July.

  • Past workshops: 2018 Montreal; 2019 Paris; 2020 Online; 2021 Online; 2022 Calgary; 2023 Strasbourg; 2024 Vancouver

  • Future workshops: 2025 Geneva (TBC)

APPLICATION PROCESS:

  • DEADLINE: February 15th at 5:00pm EST. If the deadline falls on a weekend, applications will be accepted through the following Monday at 5:00pm EDT.

  • Late or incomplete application packages will not be accepted.

EVALUATION CRITERIA:

Students must be a student member of ACTOR in order to be eligible for this award. Applications are adjudicated across the following equally weighted criteria:

  1. The scientific/artistic merit of project

  2. The project’s potential to stimulate interest and engage ACTOR members in institutions other than the applicant’s own

  3. The interdisciplinary potential of the project – The ACTOR community involves researchers from various disciplines, thus it is important that selected papers speak to this broad audience. While not every project needs to be interdisciplinary, all need to be accessible to the broad range of disciplines represented in ACTOR.

  4. The project’s relevance to ACTOR’s mandate

OTHER INFORMATION:

  • Student presenters will be asked to help with various small tasks at the workshop, such as note-taking during meetings.

  • Successful student applicants might have to fund their trips upfront and be reimbursed via expense report following the workshop.

  • Recipients of ACTOR student presentation funds may be asked to provide a brief summary report, interview, or blog post about their experience at the workshop.
