Presentation:

Speaker Series - Leyla McCalla

The Sub-Saharan Africa/Diaspora subgroup is pleased to announce the second season of the "Afrological Perspectives on Timbre & Orchestration" speaker series which will unfold over the 2023-2024 academic year. The series returned on October 5 with a presentation by Grammy award recipient Leyla McCalla entitled "How the cello became a vehicle for arranging Haitian songs." The recording of her presentation will be available soon - stay tuned!

Professorship at Moncton University

After completion of his postdoctoral fellowship at University of Montreal last August, former ACTOR postdoc and current ACTOR member Jason Noble was appointed professor of instrumental and electroacoustic composition at University of Moncton. Congratulations on this great achievement!

Speaker Series - Matthew Morrison

The ACTOR speaker series will continue on October 12 from 12:00 to 1:15pm (EDT). The second speaker we will feature is Matthew D. Morrison of New York University. His talk is titled "Blackface, Black Sounds, and Black String Band Music." The series has been organized by ACTOR student members Jason Winikoff, Danielle Davis, Joshua Rosner, Chidi Obijiaku, and J Marchand Knight. As always, the presentation will be held over zoom, is free, open to the public, and does not require registration.

  • October 13: Paysage will be broadcasted on the monthly series EARS HAVE EYES at on CJWS, the University of Calgary community radio station.

  • October 28: Blur will be presented at the Mantis Festival, in Manchester, UK.

  • November 3: Blur and Blur 2.0 will be presented at the eviMUS Festival in Saarbrucken, Germany.

  • December 1: Paysage will be performed at SONIC MATTER Listening Lounge 2023 in Zurich, Switzerland 1.

7th CIRMMT-ACTOR Symposium on Orchestration Research

The Analysis, Creation, and Teaching of Orchestration (ACTOR) Project and the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology (CIRMMT) will be co-hosting a hybrid symposium on orchestration research on Friday, October 20, 12:00-2:00 pm (EDT). The event is open to all and will include four presentations by ACTOR student members, each followed by a discussion period.

  • 12h00 - 12h30 – Orchestrating melodic masculinities: The Neptunes and the Afro-Filipino Marching Band experience, Danielle Davis (Florida State University)

  • 12h30 - 13h00 – The interplay between fundamental frequency and spectral envelope and its effect on the perception of musical instrument sounds, Simon Jacobsen (University of Oldenburg)

  • 13h00 - 13h30 – When pitch, timbre, and appearance “don’t match,” how do you categorize a voice?, Jay Marchand Knight (Concordia University)

  • 13h30 - 14h00 – Choreographing orchestration: A novel method for analyzing orchestration through ballet, Rebecca Moranis (City University of New York)

Video recording of TMC's workshop

For those who could not attend the Designing and Delivering Effective Research Presentations Workshop organized by the TMC (Training and Mentoring Committee) on 27 September, a video recording is now available on YouTube. The event featured as guest speakers ACTOR members Lindsey Reymore (Arizona State University) and Eliot Britton (University of Toronto) as well as Mithura Sanmugalingam (McGill University Teaching and Learning Services). Topics discussed include:

  • strategies for effective oral presentations

  • handling audience questions

  • slide design

  • time management

  • adapting your presentation to different audiences

Workgroups

Analysis workgroup meeting

The Analysis Workgroup will be holding a meeting on Zoom on October 19, 12:00-1:00pm EDT. All ACTOR members are welcome to join, whether or not you have been to previous analysis events! The main goal of the meeting is to discuss strategies to be adopted over this year, particularly in relation to the material collected by the CORE project. The meeting will also include a more informal opportunity to share research updates and new collaborative opportunities.
